Residential Care and Independent Living Support for adults with learning difficulties Dignity Group

Daytime Activities

Our aim is to provide a day time activity package which will meet each person’s needs and increase their chances of living a more independent life. We organise daytime activities in line with what is agreed at Service User's  Plan Review Meetings, which produce an individual range of opportunities for each person. We have some resources ourselves and use them productively when it is appropriate but much prefer, whenever possible, to use community based facilities. We have established links with other resources, agencies and facilities, which will continue to expand and work in conjunction with our own.

We are involved in some work with small groups of people which can include a focus on academic and practical work, enabling people to learn new skills and brush up on existing ones.
We would much rather that people are helped to access ordinary community facilities whenever possible (in line with our philosophy of integration with the community), but sometimes we need to accept that some services are just not available, so we must provide our own. We have a range of Personal Computers (PC's) and software packages which can help develop a variety of skills. Often used for basic education but sometimes for higher level word processing and office skills for those hoping to go on to find work experience.
Many people take part in our Self-Help groups, Cooking Skills, Community Awareness, Money Management and Budgeting, Self Image/Advocacy groups, Personal Relationships workshops, Horse Riding and many more besides.

Work experience opportunities are arranged via a range of agencies, including Mencap's "Pathways to Employment" and the Chichester College of Art & Technology's work experience programme.
A close monitoring system is in place for people’s progress to be evaluated regularly and adjustments can be made quickly where needed. In addition, we have our own contacts in the community and can often place people into work experience independently. Many people have chosen to take up college places and are able to gain qualifications and develop skills which will enable them to go on to further independence or higher educational opportunities. We have a good relationship with a local college providing learning support for those who require more assistance in taking courses in a range of subjects leading to qualifications and real valued work experience.
